That’s right – if you lose weight too quickly your body usually ends up burning off fat.
So, while the number on the scale goes down you end up with a skinny-fat physique that is tricky to get rid of.
So just how should you go about losing fat?

How to Get Shredded

First of all, you will need to make sure you are burning more calories each day than you are consuming.

This will cause your body to break down fat tissue to provide the energy it needs to perform all the necessary functions.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky.
If you are in too much of a calorie deficit, then your body will respond by burning muscle tissue rather than fat tissue.
In fact, getting your body to burn only fat tissue is a bit of an art form to say the least.
In order to make sure you burn fat rather than muscle, make sure you are going to the gym 3-4 times per week and doing resistance training.
Also, make sure you are only consuming a modest deficit of about 300-500 calories per day.
Finally, make sure your diet is comprised of lots of protein to make sure your muscles have the nutrients they need for maintenance.
The reason large calorie deficits (and crash diets in general) don’t work is because your body responds to the low nutrient level by slowing down metabolism and other important body functions (such as testosterone production) in order to hold on to whatever fat stores it has left.
This is an evolutionary response – we used to live in a world where it was common for people to die as a result of starvation.
Obviously, this isn’t really the case anymore but our bodies haven’t caught up.
Therefore, the trick to losing fat sustainably is to keep our metabolisms running high while consuming a calorie deficit.

Set Realistic Goals

If you are aiming to get shredded in time for that trip to Mexico in 2 weeks, then it’s already too late.
Instead, aim to lose 0.5 pounds to 1 pound per week.
This is a safe rate of fat loss that will result in minimal muscle loss.
At the end of your diet you will be left with a lean, hard physique rather than a skinny-fat one.
A lot of guys also want to know what bodyfat % to aim for in order to get six pack abs.
Generally speaking, you will need to be under 10%, but it varies from person to person.
Instead of going by bodyfat % use the mirror as your guide.
After all, you are losing fat to LOOK MORE AESTHETIC not to ACHIEVE A LOWER BODYFAT %.

Avoiding the Traps
